Outfit of the Day, Vol. 4: Black and White for My BFF’s Baby Shower

Sat, 07/30/2011 by Karen | Posted in: Just For Fun

Tags: fashion

I’ve been feeling kinda chunky and bloated all day long (damn you, PMS!) and came this close to wearing sweats and a tank top to my BFF’s baby shower this afternoon, but I didn’t want to break any unwritten party etiquette rules like “Thou shalt not wear stretchy pants to events celebrating major life changes,” or anything like that, so I nixed the idea, as tempting as it was.

Instead, I pulled out one of my favorite dresses, a black cotton strapless A-line I picked up years ago at Gap.

I love how forgiving it is. Ah, sweet, wonderful A-line… Fitted at the top, it gradually widens toward the hem to form the shape of a capital letter A. They’re one of my favorite cuts — so great if you’re trying to disguise your tum and/or bum but still want to show a little bit of shape.

I think the black makes it a little more slimming, too, and the color never really goes out of style.

Here I’m dressing it up with some Chanel-inspired accessories from Forever 21, an ivory lace sweater and black wedges. I considered dressing it down with a denim jacket, hoops and flip-flops but decided against it this time around.

Dress — Gap (it was years ago…)Sweater — Nordstrom (I found it in the junior’s section)Shoes — Franco Sarto (I’m not sure if they still carry these…)Necklace — Forever 21 (check the store for availability)Purse — Kate Spade (check the store for availability)

What’s your favorite flattering/forgiving outfit or dress?

Well, my Giant Pet Hair Roller and I bid you adieu (this dress picks up cat fur like crazy!). See you after the shower, hopefully with some loot from the games. :D

Win a $50 Sephora eGift card from Makeup and Beauty Blog
Rise and shine, morning glory. Happy Saturday. :)

I hope your weekend got off to a good start. It’s a little foggy out here today, both literally and figuratively. I see fog outside my window and feel foggy in the head, but it’s nothing a little coffee can’t cure.

What’s on your agenda for today? Doing anything fun? Right now I’m just getting ready to drive out to the East Bay for my friend Jen’s baby shower. That should be fun. Tabs is going to stay here at the office, though, and hold down the fort.

Other than that, nothing new to report. I did see Cowboys & Aliens last night, but I didn’t think it was as good as I thought it would be… Shirtless Daniel Craig, however, was exceptional. Truly top notch. If they make a sequel, they should just call it Shirtless Cowboy & Aliens and cut right to the chase, yeehaw!

Now I reckon it’s time for this cowgirl to giddy up and git some caffeine. While I do that, how about we start another giveaway?

Still Eager To Look Younger?

Still Eager To Look Younger? The skin and beauty tips I mentioned in my previous post are not enough if you want to completely look younger. What about your hands, hair and skin? So let’s not waste time and learn about the rest.

Teeth – Whiten the stained teeth. To do this buy whitening toothpastes (to remove the stains from the surface of your teeth) or whitening gels. You can also visit a dentist and you’ll have your teeth whitened in less than an hour.

Still Eager To Look Younger?Hair – As we age our hair gets thinner. What to do? Use certain tricks. Do your best to lift your hair and to add volume. Hot rollers or perm are a great option.

As for the gray hair, don’t get too irritated by that and don’t think too hard over that. Besides, gray hair is gradually turning into a trend (if it hasn’t yet). I like everything natural or at least close to natural, so that’s why I don’t like hair coloring very much. Instead I advise you to make most of it. But if you do not agree with me, hair colors will always help you.

Skin – Exfoliation is a great way to get rid of dead and dry skin cells. Get an exfoliating cleanser and scrub your face and body with that. If you do this on a regular basis, you will get rid of the dull skin and reveal the fresher one. Just don’t scrub too hard not to damage the skin.

Still Eager To Look Younger? If you want your skin to look younger and smoother, eat salmon. It contains all the necessary nutrients and protein essential for healthy skin. It also contains Omega-3 fatty acids, which will not only fight effectively the wrinkles, but will also keep the skin plump.

Hands – One of the first signs of old age are the hands. If you want them to look younger, apply the best anti aging moisturizer you will find. If you apply moisturizer throughout the day, you’ll draw water into the skin. As a result your hands will look younger and plumper. In this case I advise you to buy the best anti aging moisturizer containing shea butter or glycerin.

Nails – When you start your hand care don’t forget about your nail care either. The nails can have become brittle and breakable. Start your nail care with correct trimming. Seems an easy thing, yet not many people manage to do that. And use vitamin B7 supplements. These supplements will make your nails stronger.

Still Eager To Look Younger?Heels – When you are young it doesn’t really matter how much you have walked and how thick layers of skin your walking has caused to the heels. But when you are already getting older, the possibility you will regain those soft heeles is also getting less. You can’t regain, but you can take certain measures: soak your feet in hot water. Your skin will become moist and you’ll be able to remove the skin by scrubbing with a pumice stone.

Cigarettes – Needless to say that smoking causes wrinkles. I know many women who smoke and many who don’t. Trust me when I compare those two “groups” the smoking group immediately loses. So if you are really eager to look younger give it up. Do you like that wrinkled and non-elastic face you see in the mirror? I’m sure you don’t.

Still Eager To Look Younger?I hope you’ll consider my skin and beauty tips and will always look younger than the years count in your age.

Lip Cosmetic Surgery: Are Huge Lips All The Rage Now?

Lip Cosmetic Surgery: Are Huge Lips All The Rage Now?Shannon Tweed, Janice Dickinson, Nicole Kidman, Amy Fisher, Lindsay Lohan, Donatella Versace, Liv Tyler, Nikki Cox, Paris Hilton, and Keira Knightley — these are all beautiful women who model or act. What else do they have in common? How about lip cosmetic surgery, done with injectable material like Restylane, fat grafts, or implants. Who gets the injections and why do they feel they need them?

As we age, our lips lose the fullness of youth, smokers get wrinkles around the lips and some people are just born with thin lips. Lips are one thing that set your face apart and are an efficient part of beauty.

Lip Cosmetic Surgery: Are Huge Lips All The Rage Now?There are many types of lip cosmetic surgery available and I advise you to do your research and understand the procedures available. The most important thing is to find a plastic surgeon with experience in lip cosmetic surgery. Some procedures are simple injections, which are the most popular because the results are immediate and there is no recuperation time. Some of the procedures such as lifts take longer and there is some recuperation time, perhaps as long as three weeks.

Another surgery is inserting saline implants done with dental anesthesia and numbing the mouth. The patient is awake during this procedure, telling the surgeon when the lips are as full as they want. There are many ways of filling the lips and surgeons are always finding new ways to inject the lips of people today. Most lip surgery is done for enhancement, rather than medical reasons.

Lip Cosmetic Surgery: Are Huge Lips All The Rage Now?Under eye cosmetic surgery is different for a couple of reasons. Many surgeries on the eye are for skin that actually droops causing vision problems, but the majority are for cosmetic reasons. Skin gets puffy as we age and droops and causes black circles under the eye.

Another effect of under eye cosmetic surgery is the time spent recovering. Bruising, swelling and bleeding are some of the after effects. Only you can decide if either of the surgeries here are for you.

Trying To Treat My Cellulite: A Visit To Dermatologist

Trying To Treat My Cellulite: A Visit To DermatologistI hate myself every time I look into the mirror. I don’t hate my face, don’t get me wrong. I hate what I see on my body and what’s called cellulite. There is hardly any woman who doesn’t know what cellulite is, so I don’t want to spend time on defining it. Instead let’s see whether you and I can find the best skin care and get rid of it or no. But first let’s understand one thing — cellulite doesn’t develop among women who gained or failed to work out their weight. Every woman is at risk of developing it.

On which parts of the body does it develop? Such was my first question to my dermatologist. The common places, she said, where cellulite develops are the backside and the thighs. However, note that the abdomen, upper arms and breasts are also risky places.

What causes cellulite? Some time ago I heard one of my absolutely skinny friends talking highly that skinny people don’t develop cellulite. Trust me she was wrong — it doesn’t matter how slender you are, because cellulite is not related to your fats or bones, it’s related to your skin.

Genetics is an important factor in cellulite. For example my mom had cellulite, and now I have. Other causes of cellulite include aging and hormonal changes. These are factors you can’t control.

Trying To Treat My Cellulite: A Visit To DermatologistHowever, there are factors you can control. Let’s not forget that cellulite cannot be prevented, but your lifestyle can affect the appearance. For best skin care avoid fluid retention, inactivity, excess body fat, yo-yo effect and a high-carbohydrate diet.

For a long time I thought that tanning can hide cellulite. I’m sure many of you thought the same way. And that’s the basic reason why I always exposed my backside to the sun whenever we were at the beach. My dermatologist smiled when I told her this. She said that tanning is not a good way to hide cellulite because once it fades away, cellulite becomes even more obvious. “Do not forget that the UV rays damage the skin and make it less resilient,” she said.

I wondered whether healthy weight loss could be a good “treatment” to my cellulite. She was kind of waiting for such a question. She said that it doesn’t matter whether it’s healthy weight loss or no, because weight loss, in particular, can even worsen it, as weight loss may cause loose skin.

Then I told her that I use certain retinol creams, methylxanthine creams and herbal creams to treat my cellulite. “Do they help?” she asked me. “Not really,” I answered. “Those creams can sometimes show signs of improvement but yet there hasn’t been any research proving their effectiveness. Some of them seem to improve the cellulite appearance by creating thicker skin, others break down the fat, but it’s a question whether they treat cellulite itself or no. Herbal creams, for example, are believed to reduce cellulite, but they cause allergic reactions in people. So they are not effective and are not best skin care for cellulite,” she said.

Learn about the rest of our conversation in my next post.

Simple Hair Care For Men: Mens Hair Styling Tips

Simple Hair Care For Men: Mens Hair Styling TipsStill a few years ago men were not equally conscious about their looks as women. If they used to talk about their looks, grooming or their hair style, it was considered as a topic of laughter. Things have definitely changed now. Now you are a part of modernization. Just think how many times you have tried to look like attractive men?

Hair style influences your personality to a great extent. Let’s begin your makeover with some mens hair styling tips. You should firstly know the type of hair you possess. Learn whether your hair is dry, oily or normal. Afterwards decide on the shampoo and conditioner that are meant for you hair type. It’s very easy, right? However, I know a lot of men who pick the first shampoo they see and start using it. In the end many of them end up with damaged or low quality hair.

Shampoo your hair with warm water but apply conditioner with cold water. Use your fingers to massage your scalp. No matter it’s a shampoo or a conditioner make sure you completely rinse them off to avoid any itchy feeling. Simple Hair Care For Men: Mens Hair Styling TipsWhen you are over with the washing process, comb your hair in a very gentle way removing all the frizzes and tangles. Use a wide toothed comb. Another thing to consider in mens hair styling tips is to comb the hair down.

To give your hair a more touched up look, use gel to style in the way you want. If you want your hair to shine, go for serum. Follow these mens hair styling tips and be sure to look sexier and more handsome than the attractive men you have seen so far.
