Asian Eyelid Surgery, also known as ?Double Eyelid Surgery? or Asian Blepharoplasty, is the most popular surgery in Asia and growing in North America. The idea of this ethnic plastic surgery derives from the fact that some Asian women desire to have a more ?western? look, which includes double eyelids.
Unfortunately, having a single eyelid is associated with having a tired, puffy appearance, and having a crease implies a more eye-opening and beautiful appearance that some desire.
The popular manual method of achieving a double eyelid is by applying tacky glue over the bottom half of the eyelid, and gently forcing a crease by pushing upwards with a plastic mini-fork. The glue will hold the crease in place until the end of the day, or when the glue is removed from the crease of the eye. It?s a very inexpensive way of achieving the desired look, but the process can get tedious over time.
Asian women opt for Asian eyelid surgery for the exact same reason American women voluntarily get plastic surgery: to be viewed as more physically attractive to society. Unfortunately we?re constantly told by the media that we need to measure up to a certain standard of beauty, or else we?re not considered ?attractive enough?. The result is that we become detached from our ethnic identities and resent our distinct beauty.
There are two commonly-used ways this type of surgery is performed:
Incisional Approach ? A small piece of fat is surgically removed from the eyelid, forcing a new dominant crease to form when the wound closes and heals.
Non-Incisional Techniques ? Though not as successful as the incisional method, a suture is forced through several stabs in the crease area, then pulled underneath the skin to create a fold. Another technique can also be performed using a CO2 laser, which removes a portion of the crease to form a crease.
