Outfit of the Day, Vol. 4: Black and White for My BFF’s Baby Shower

Sat, 07/30/2011 by Karen | Posted in: Just For Fun

Tags: fashion

I’ve been feeling kinda chunky and bloated all day long (damn you, PMS!) and came this close to wearing sweats and a tank top to my BFF’s baby shower this afternoon, but I didn’t want to break any unwritten party etiquette rules like “Thou shalt not wear stretchy pants to events celebrating major life changes,” or anything like that, so I nixed the idea, as tempting as it was.

Instead, I pulled out one of my favorite dresses, a black cotton strapless A-line I picked up years ago at Gap.

I love how forgiving it is. Ah, sweet, wonderful A-line… Fitted at the top, it gradually widens toward the hem to form the shape of a capital letter A. They’re one of my favorite cuts — so great if you’re trying to disguise your tum and/or bum but still want to show a little bit of shape.

I think the black makes it a little more slimming, too, and the color never really goes out of style.

Here I’m dressing it up with some Chanel-inspired accessories from Forever 21, an ivory lace sweater and black wedges. I considered dressing it down with a denim jacket, hoops and flip-flops but decided against it this time around.

Dress — Gap (it was years ago…)Sweater — Nordstrom (I found it in the junior’s section)Shoes — Franco Sarto (I’m not sure if they still carry these…)Necklace — Forever 21 (check the store for availability)Purse — Kate Spade (check the store for availability)

What’s your favorite flattering/forgiving outfit or dress?

Well, my Giant Pet Hair Roller and I bid you adieu (this dress picks up cat fur like crazy!). See you after the shower, hopefully with some loot from the games. :D

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Black Beauty: Popular makeup and beauty books to compliment your rich skin tone!

FINE BEAUTY

Book Description
Celebrity makeup artist to black beauty clients ranging from Tyra Banks to Patti LaBelle, Sam Fine presents a gorgeous, photo-packed celebration of African-American women. This book is filled with sensational techniques, makeovers, celebrities, and plenty of information on the business of black beauty.
It?s the perfect gift for every black woman, including sisters, girlfriends, mothers, or just for you!
Some highlights from the book: * Illustrated with lots of color and black-and-white photos
* Support from top celebrity models and entertainers
* Before-and-after makeover photos included
* Advice from Sam?s peers about surviving the beauty business

Review
The information is mostly presented in a question/answer format that is most commonly used in fashion and beauty magazines. The information is extremely helpful, and I love that color photos are used to provide a visual of what he?s actually referring to. This book is 157 pages in all, and the first 50 pages contain makeup tips and techniques that you will find beneficial.
The rest of the book consists of pictures of the many celebrities Sam Fine has worked with and a summary of their look. You will not find information on skin care or a report on step-by-step makeup application for creating different looks. I recommend this book if you already have solid knowledge about how to apply makeup, because it does contain some extra tips you can use. If you are a beginner, this book may not be for you.
THE BEAUTY OF COLOR

Book Description
Iman, the adored fashion model icon and cosmetics entrepreneur, brings to you one of the first books that embrace global beauty and women of all ethnicities. In a period when the face of beauty has changed, the most celebrated women in Hollywood include such stars as Jennifer Lopez, Halle Berry, and Lucy Liu. Iman delivers a new approach to makeup and skin care by resisting categorizing women according to ethnicity.
She welcomes the whole range of skin color ? from light to dark. This is the first beauty and makeup book to truly address skin tones across the spectrum-Latina, Black, Asian, Indian, Native American, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, as well as women of mixed ethnicities. Because Iman has had a stable career as a world-class supermodel and has founded two top cosmetics lines, she understands the difficulties ethnic beauties have always had with skin care and makeup.
In The Beauty of Color, Iman gives very detailed information on skin care regimens and how you can use palettes targeted to your exact skin tone and type. One of the things I love most about this book is that she does include step-by-step information on how to achieve certain looks. This book is a must-have regardless of your current level of knowledge.
Review
This book is wonderful on so many different levels because it contains beautiful pictures, and is also extremely informative. It is one of few guides that is not only for ethnic beauties (Black, Latina, Asian, Indian, etc.), but it is for all women. Iman provides great instruction on issues regarding makeup application, skin care, and color palette selection. You will receive instructions on how to create certain looks with makeup, from a natural look to a glamour girl look. If you want to expand your knowledge even more, she includes tips to achieve vampy and ghetto fabulous looks as well.
If you have trouble selecting the correct foundation, blush, or bronzer, this book provides a firm foundation on how to do so. Furthermore, Iman discusses skin care issues (including hyperpigmentation) and gives care instructions on oily, dry, combination, and normal skin.
It is illustrated with beautiful, vibrant photographs, and contains a generous amount of information on makeup and skin care. If you love makeup and want to apply it correctly, buy this book!
ESSENCE: BEAUTY BASICS AND BEYOND

This guide easily shows you how to look absolutely fabulous, by celebrating black beauty inside and out, and provides step-by-step advice to achieve the best in hair, skin and makeup. Review
This book presents to you many different images of black women, from those with lighter skin or European features, to darker skin tones. As an added bonus, you will receive excellent information on hair care, skin care, and nutrition. The pictures are dazzling and show the beauty of black skin through great advice and recommendations.
